Herdez Salsa Taquera

The literal translation for 'taquera' is 'rack' as in billiard queue rack.

In context of salsa, it seems to refer to a taqueria, or taco shop.

The Herdez web site says, "Its smoky, tangy-hot flavor comes from the combination of tomatillos and morita peppers, giving it the familiar flavor you’ll find in taquerías and dinner tables all over Mexico."

The ingredients on the label simply say "chile peppers".

In any case, its a good, spicy salsa, but a little on the watery side. The flavor is authentic and I'd recommend it.

4 stars.

Herdez Salsa Chilpotle

This is a completely different salsa. It is more like a brown chipotle-flavored sauce with the texture and consistency of BBQ sauce.

With a salty, chipotle flavor, it's got a good heat.

Very good taste, but if I saw it in a bowl at a party, I'd probably be afraid to try it because it doesn't look like regular salsa.

Kroger Hot Traditional Salsa

Quite salty blended salsa. Not a lot of discernible ingredients beyond tomatoes.

A decent heat on it, but not really hot.

Not a bad salsa, but nothing really outstanding about it.

3 stars.

Newman's Own Medium Salsa

The plain name is a perfect match for the salsa: plain.

The sweet and salty flavor at first, fades fast into plain salsa flavor.

Definitely a mild salsa labeled as medium heat.

A deep red color with blended texture. It looks a lot better than it tastes.

La Mexicana Hot Salsa

Has the appearance of chunky vegetable soup.

Very watery. Apparently cooked very little, if at all.

Labeled hot, but it is really mild.

Virtually no discernable salsa flavor.  Just vegetables.

1 Star.

Chachie's Premium Hot Salsa

Fresh red garden salsa with fresh tomato flavor up front.

Way too heavy on the diced tomato content with limited other ingredients.

Reminds me of gazpacho more than salsa. Has a good heat on it, but nothing too intense.

Might be a good vegetable side dish with dinner.

2 Stars.

Private Selection Fiery Habanero & Chipotle Hot Salsa

Much more blended texture with the dirty flavor of habanero and chipotle boldly up front.

A good amount of heat, though not inedible like you would expect from habanero. Plus the burn fades quickly.

This is a good salsa for the adventurous salsa connoisseur.

4 Stars.

Private Selection Tequila Tart Lime Flavor Mild Salsa

A good crushed vegetable texture that combines for a sweeter-tasting salsa.

A decent spice for mild salsa.

Noticeably absent lime flavor and far more sweet than tart. Needless to say, the tequila flavor is also missing.

If you told me this had orange juice in it rather than lime, I'd believe you.

Still a good salsa. 3 Stars.

Tostitos All Natural Chunky Medium Salsa

Labeled "medium" heat, but clearly in the mild category.

Very similar to Pace Mild. Chunky texture, but vegetables are well cooked.

Fresh-tasting, but slightly tangy tomato flavor gives it a a little canned food sensation.

A good, basic salsa. Won't offend.

3 stars.

Guy Fieri Chipotle Salsa

Interesting blended texture and rich red color with an appearance akin to spaghetti sauce.

Immediate chipotle flavor, labeled medium heat but probably on the warm end of mild.

Unfortunately, the chipolte flavor fades quickly and you're left with a rather unsatisfying tomato paste flavor.

2 stars.

El Pinto All Natural Medium Roasted Jalapeno Salsa

"World's Best Tasting" New Mexico Salsa with select flame-roasted and hand-picked jalapeños.

Voted #1 Scovia Awards.

Medium chunky consistency with immediate burn from jalapeños. Appears to be half peppers and half tomatoes with a slight roasted flavor.

This is a hot salsa even though it is labeled "medium".

Needs more salt, but a good hearty salsa nonetheless. 4 stars.

Riverwalk Cantina Mild Salsa

With the consistency of ketchup and few recognizable ingredients, Riverwalk Cantina Mild salsa is not for salsa connoisseurs. It claims to have jalapeños and onions, but neither comes through in the taste.

Salted tomato sauce is the primary flavor. If I was the city of San Antonio, I would ask to have my name removed from the label.

Chili Garlic Sauce

Túong Ot Tói Vietnam (Aka Rooster Sauce)

Not actually designed to be a salsa, but works really well for the adventuresome.

Bright red chili with obvious chili seeds. Very salty and spicy. Vinegar is a primary flavor and garlic is third after the chili.

Not for the faint of heart. You can feel the heat in your stomach after a few bites.

If it wasn't so salty that it seems unhealthy, it would merit a higher rating.

3 stars.

Jack's Special Medium Salsa

All natural. Garden Fresh Gourmet. America's #1 Award Winning Salsa.

Slightly sweet, not very spicy for a medium. Mostly tomato, fairly watery. Blended well for a garden salsa with a smooth chunky texture.

Good flavor (especially if you like tomatoes), but nothing special. No pizazz. If you want a salsa that doesn't offend anyone, this is it.

Purchased at Costco.  3 stars.
